Here's a new song we are singing in the mornings these days:
A continued thank you again for all those that have brought a snack to share. We are doing fine with snacks right now; I'll put a message out when we are getting low again. On Friday we had Watermelon from the PPS Fruit/Veggie program- Yum!
Literacy: We have done two book studies about our 5 senses since the last Blog post. We learned what the five senses are, how we use them, how they help us enjoy the world, and how they help us be more aware. Students noticed how the texts were similar and how they were different. We collected evidence from the books that showed what we learned/saw in the books and we talked about the roles of the author and illustrator is making a book. (also a fun video of Pete the Cat)
During our book studies we are trying to look deeper into the text to see what can be revealed from the pictures, words, and even just the colors. We studies Le Gourmet by Pablo Picasso and talked about how the colors in a book or piece of art can make us feel certain ways. We also used this opportunity to talk about what a writing prompt is and how to best answer it. For this activity we made predictions about what this child is eating and completed a sentence frame: I think _______ is in the bowl. Students worked on listening for any of our known letter sounds and used illustrations to show even more of their thinking.
Students also started to notice how the kids in our books felt about their senses by looking at their faces and body language. We are discovering adjectives to describe various senses. So far we have explored the sense of taste with words like: salty, sweet, juicy, delicious, spicy, sour.
Foundational Skills for Reading: We now have 9 letters to practice writing and saying (t, f, b, n, m, u, i, o, c). Our newest 4 include vowels: u, i and o and the consonant "c". We discussed the importance of vowels; they're in EVERY word and how knowing how to write the letter "c" will help us write many more letters coming up (a, d, g, o, q). All of these newest letters are "plane line letters". We are only practicing the short vowel sounds as this point in the year. With the introduction to vowels we will shortly begin making words with our 9 letters; you can try this at home too.
u - up - /u/
i - itch - /i/
o - octopus - /o/
c - cat - /c/
Math: We are learning about position words and how to describe locations of things by using words like above, behind, next to, besides, under, inside, outside, in front of, on top of, and even starting to figure out right and left. We are also comparing lengths and heights; practicing using words like shorter, longer, and taller.
Students have done a great job using iReady online to practice math skills at their own level. Students took a placement diagnostic to see what they already know and now each student is working at their own level and speed when we work on the computers 2-3x a week.
Social Studies: We've continued our study of Latiné Heritage Month by learning about the great soccer/futból player, Pelé. We've watched some videos and saw pictures of his amazing kicks and goals. During our reading lessons we also learned and practiced retelling a story of his life using the books aligned to our Fundations curriculum, called Geodes. Students will take home a black and white copy of this wordless book next week.

Here are some books we enjoyed recently (I found some links to read alouds if your child would like to hear them again):
